Microbiology

Bachelor of Science | B.Sc.

Microbiology is a research oriented subject which plays a pivotal role in our daily lives. In the three year programme, Semester I and Semester II consists of fundamental concepts in Microbiology like Microscopy, Biomolecules, Cell Biology, Basics of Fermentation, Control of Microorganisms, Air, Water and Soil Microbiology; whereas Semester III and IV consists of topics of Immunology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Virology, Taxonomy, Dairy and Food Microbiology along with basic and advanced Instrumentation.

In Course III, choice is offered between Advances in Chromatography and Advances in Microscopy in Semester III and between Dairy Microbiology and Biofertilizer, Biopesticide in Semester IV. Semester V and Semester VI while focusing on the depth and applications of the above topics will also include new topics of Population Genetics, Emerging Infectious Diseases and Advanced Virology, along with Discipline Specific Electives and Skill Enhancement Elective courses. The syllabi for the three-year undergraduate programme has been designed to enable the students to understand and select an area of their interest to pursue a career in Microbiology.

Pedagogy

A Blended mode is adopted to keep the teaching-learning and assessment student-centric. With an intention to facilitate the teaching- learning and evaluation process with the assistance of Information and Communication Technology, also to get a real time progress update of the learner, teachers adopt Flipped Classroom approach and ICT based Assessment tools for evaluation.

Learning Management Systems such as Moodle, Google Classroom, Edmodo are adopted to facilitate the academic transactions. Department started a Student chapter in association with Microbiologist Society, India.
